Build my own plugin on the WordPress AI stack
WordPress now ships three pieces for AI: an AI Client to call models, the Abilities API to describe what your plugin can do, and the MCP Adapter to expose that to agents. This is the order I would learn them in.
-
Read this first. It explains the idea the rest is built on, in plain language.
Foundational explainer by Jonathan Bossenger.

Then do this. A hands-on workshop from the Training Team that covers all three pieces.
Official WordPress Training Team hands-on workshop for building AI-powered admin tools with the WordPress 7.0 AI building blocks (PHP AI Client, Abilities API, and MCP).
-
The SDK you will actually write code against. Provider-agnostic, so your plugin is not tied to one AI company.
Platform-agnostic PHP AI client developed collaboratively with the broader PHP community. Write code against `wp_ai_client_prompt()` and it works with any registered provider.
-
The official AI plugin. Read the source when you want to see how the core team does it.
Official AI plugin (formerly "AI Experiments") shipping experiments including title generation, content summarization, alt text, featured image generation, and image editing. Reference implementation for the Abilities API.
-
Mine. Point it at any installed plugin and it suggests abilities you could register. Handy when you are staring at a blank file.
Scan any installed WordPress plugin and discover potential abilities for the Abilities API (WP 6.9+). One click, static analysis, no code execution.
-
List and run abilities from the terminal. The fastest way to check your registration worked.
Official WP-CLI package for listing, inspecting, and executing registered abilities from the command line.
